How are you supported as an Apprentice?

Apprentices succeed with ongoing guidance, dedicated mentorship, and collaborative support from South Hampshire College Group

Supporting apprentices goes far beyond classroom teaching. At South Hampshire College Group (SHCG), we ensure every apprentice is set up to thrive by combining expert mentoring, personalised college support, and structured review meetings.

Here’s how our approach boosts confidence, fosters skills growth, and drives progress—all the way to successful qualification and meaningful employment.

The Role of Mentors: Trusted Guides on the Apprenticeship Journey

Every SHCG apprentice is matched with a dedicated workplace mentor—someone experienced in their trade or profession. Mentors provide practical advice, coaching, and a listening ear. They model best practices and share real-world insight, helping apprentices bridge the gap between theory and hands-on work.

Mentors are crucial for building confidence on the job. They guide problem-solving, give constructive feedback, and set achievable goals. When apprentices face challenges, mentors offer solutions and encouragement. Their ongoing presence means apprentices never feel unsupported, even when tackling new or difficult tasks.

SHCG’s Commitment: Individual Support and Practical Resources

South Hampshire College Group offers a structured support network that complements workplace mentoring. Apprentices are assigned a dedicated apprenticeship coach from SHCG, whose role includes:

Regular Check-ins: Coaches monitor progress, address concerns, and act as a central contact for both apprentices and employers. -

Tailored Advice: From wellbeing guidance to skills development, coaches personalise support to meet each apprentice’s unique needs.

Access to Facilities: Apprentices benefit from state-of-the-art learning environments and industry-standard equipment across our campuses in Eastleigh, Fareham, and Southampton.

The college team coordinates with mentors and employers to ensure learning is always relevant and aligned with career goals.

Review Meetings: Ensuring Apprentices Stay On Track Structured review meetings are at the heart of apprentice support. These meetings—typically held every 8-12 weeks—bring together the apprentice, their workplace mentor, and their SHCG apprenticeship coach.

They serve to:

  • Review Progress: Track qualification milestones, celebrate achievements, and set new targets.
  • Identify Support Needs: Quickly resolve any workplace, skills, or wellbeing issues.
  • Plan Development: Agree on next steps for learning, whether in the workplace or at college. This collaborative approach means issues are addressed promptly, and apprentices receive the guidance they need to move forward confidently.

At SHCG, apprentices are supported every step of the way.

Dedicated mentors, expert coaches, and regular review meetings create a holistic environment for learning and growth. This ensures apprentices not only meet academic requirements but also develop the real-world skills and confidence needed for long-term career success.

Whether you’re an apprentice, an employer, or a parent, you can trust South Hampshire College Group to provide the tools and support that make apprenticeships rewarding for everyone involved.
