What is off-the-job training?

Off-the-job training means structured learning beyond everyday job duties—here’s how it works, what activities qualify, and how SHCG supports your apprenticeship success

Understanding how off-the-job training fits into your apprenticeship is key to maximising progress and meeting government requirements. At South Hampshire College Group (SHCG), we ensure all apprentices complete meaningful off-the-job training that strengthens skills, boosts confidence, and makes learning truly work for you and your employer.

What Is Off-the-Job Training?

Off-the-job training refers to structured learning that takes place during your normal working hours but is separate from your usual job tasks. It must account for at least 20% of your paid time over the course of your apprenticeship. This rule ensures apprentices are gaining new knowledge and skills—not just working, but learning in ways that support their long-term development.

What Counts as Off-the-Job Training?

A wide variety of activities can be counted as off-the-job training, provided they are relevant to your apprenticeship standard and help you progress. At SHCG, we make sure off-the-job learning is engaging, valuable, and aligned with your goals. The following activities typically count:

  • Classroom learning: Lessons at college covering theory, technical knowledge, and practical skills.
  • Workshops or masterclasses: Specialist sessions run by industry professionals either at SHCG or in the workplace.
  • Online learning and webinars: Structured e-learning, interactive platforms, or virtual lessons with guided outcomes.
  • Shadowing and observing: Watching experienced colleagues perform advanced tasks or new techniques.
  • Industry visits: Trips to suppliers, manufacturers, or sector events to broaden your understanding of the workplace.
  • Project work or assignments:** Tasks set by college staff that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Practical training not part of your day-to-day job: For example, learning new software or practicing a skill that’s not yet in your routine work.

What Doesn’t Count?

Routine tasks, work that’s part of your job description, and unsupervised self-study without set goals don’t count as off-the-job training.

The focus remains on structured activities that stretch your knowledge and advance your apprenticeship standards.
