What do I wear for an interview and how do I prepare?

Practical Apprenticeship Interview Tips: How to Prepare, What to Wear, and Succeed In-Person or Online

Nailing your apprenticeship interview is about more than just knowing your CV—it’s your chance to show your enthusiasm, professionalism, and potential. Here are essential tips to help you make the best impression, whether your interview is in person or online.

1. Preparation Is Key

Research the Employer:

Find out what the company does, its values, and what the apprenticeship involves. Prepare to explain why you want to join them and how you fit the role.

Know Your CV/Application:

Be ready to talk about your experiences, skills, and achievements. Prepare examples that show your teamwork, problem-solving, or willingness to learn.

Prepare Answers for Common Questions:

Practise talking about your strengths, weaknesses, and proudest achievements. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioural questions.

2. Dress Appropriately

Wear smart, tidy clothes—even if the workplace is casual. For online interviews, avoid distracting patterns and keep your look professional. Looking the part helps you feel confident and shows respect for the opportunity.

3. If It’s Online: Set Up Your Space

Choose a Quiet, Tidy Area:
Pick a spot with minimal background noise and a neutral background.

Check Your Tech:
Test your device, camera, microphone, and internet connection. Log in a few minutes early and check the interview link in advance.

Set Up Good Lighting:
Make sure your face is clearly visible—natural light is best if possible.

4. Ask Smart Questions

Show your interest and thinking by preparing questions for the interviewer. For example:
- What’s the biggest challenge for apprentices here?
- What would success look like in the first six months?
- Is there progression after the apprenticeship?

5. Final Pointers

- Arrive a few minutes early (in person or online), first impressions count!
- Switch off your phone or notifications.
- Smile and offer a confident handshake (if meeting face to face).
- Thank the interviewer for their time at the end.

Follow these tips and you will give yourself the best chance of being successful at interview.
