What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a fully funded opportunity to earn while you learn, build a career and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Unlike traditional full-time study, apprenticeships blend practical training on the job with learning in the classroom, giving you the best of both worlds.

You’ll earn a wage, work alongside experienced staff, and develop the real skills employers want—all while studying towards qualifications that can kickstart or advance your career.

Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of industries, from construction and engineering to digital, business, dentistry and hair and beauty.

Apprenticeships have evolved in recent years and there hasn't been a better time to do an apprenticeship. You can now get a degree through doing an apprenticeship, all free of charge.

Whether you’re just leaving school, looking to change career direction, or wanting to upskill in your current job, there’s an apprenticeship that can suit your ambitions.

To do an apprenticeship, you will need to be employed by a company as an apprentice. You will not be able to do an apprenticeship without an employer.

Most apprentices spend four days a week at work learning the ropes, and one day in college or with a training provider, deepening their understanding of the subject.

Other delivery models include block release (1 week at college, 3 weeks with employer on rotation) and blended learning (online, in-person, in the workplace).

You'll be supported throughout your apprenticeship, so you’ll never be on your own.

If you enjoy practical learning, want to earn as you learn, and are ready to build valuable industry experience, an apprenticeship could be your ideal next step.

It’s all about gaining confidence, growing your abilities, and setting yourself up for a successful future—whether that’s moving straight into employment or progressing to higher education.
