Explore Apprenticeships, T Levels, and Full-Time Study Options at South Hampshire College Group – Compare Courses, Career Pathways, and Progression Routes for Further Education Success
When considering your next steps in education or training, understanding your options is key to making the right decision for your future. At South Hampshire College Group, we offer several high-quality study pathways, each designed to prepare you for success in higher education or your chosen career.
Here’s an overview of apprenticeships, T Levels and full-time study, along with who each route suits, what to consider, and progression opportunities upon completion.
Apprenticeships
Who is it for?
Apprenticeships are best suited to those who want to learn by doing. If you thrive in real working environments, are eager to gain skills on the job, and wish to earn a wage while studying for a recognised qualification, this route is ideal. Apprenticeships are a strong fit for anyone ready to step into the world of work and build practical experience from day one.
What to consider:
You'll be employed for at least 30 hours per week, balancing your work and study commitments. Consider whether you are ready for the responsibility and independence of employment. You’ll need to be proactive in searching and applying for apprenticeship vacancies, and you’ll benefit most if you’re motivated by hands-on learning.
Career progression:
Apprenticeships can lead straight into full-time employment with your apprenticeship employer or another organisation. Some apprentices progress into higher and degree apprenticeships. Others use their qualifications to move onto university-level courses or specialist professional roles within their chosen sector.
T Levels
Who is it for?
T Levels are designed for students who enjoy a blend of classroom learning and significant industry experience. If you’re looking for a rigorous, technical qualification that provides both academic knowledge and practical work placements, T Levels could be the right match. They are suitable if you’re interested in a specific technical field—such as engineering, health, digital, or construction.
What to consider:
A T Level is a two-year programme equivalent to three A Levels, combining 80% classroom study with a 45-day industry placement. You should be comfortable with academic study but keen to experience a real-life work environment before you finish your course. Investigate which T Level subjects are available, and what local employers offer placements in your area of interest.
Career progression:
T Levels provide a direct route into employment, higher or degree apprenticeships, or university. Upon completion, you’ll be qualified for skilled employment or further study in your chosen field.
Full-Time Study (Vocational & Academic)
Who is it for?
Full-time study programmes are suitable for those who want to focus primarily on learning in a college environment, either through academic routes like A Levels or vocational qualifications.
This pathway is ideal if you enjoy structured lessons, prefer working towards exams or coursework, and are considering university as your next step.
What to consider:
These courses typically involve attending college most days each week, with a focus on classroom-based learning, project work and enrichment activities. Full-time study may also include work placements, but these are usually shorter than those included in T Levels. Think about how you like to learn and your longer-term aims—do you prefer theory, practical work, or a mix?
Career progression:
Successful completion of full-time programmes leads to a range of options: you can progress to university, start a higher or degree apprenticeship, or move directly into employment, depending on your qualifications and interests.
