What are British Values?

British values, as defined by the UK government, are a set of principles that promote an equal and just society, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

Here's a more detailed look at each value:

Democracy:
This value emphasizes the importance of citizens participating in decision-making through free and fair elections.

The Rule of Law:
This value highlights the importance of following laws that protect society and the idea that everyone is subject to the law, which is applied fairly and equally.

Individual Liberty:
This value recognizes the right of individuals to have freedom of thought, expression, and action, as long as it doesn't harm others.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance:
This value emphasizes respecting the values, ideas, and beliefs of others, while also understanding that people may have different cultures, faiths, and traditions.
At South Hampshire College Group, we believe that these core values are not just abstract concepts to be taught in isolation, but integral parts of our daily interactions and educational environment. By weaving democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance into the fabric of our college life, we create a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere where students and staff alike can thrive. This holistic approach ensures that these principles are lived and experienced, fostering a community that is not only aware of these values but actively practices them in every aspect of college life.

At South Hampshire College Group, we actively encourage democratic decision-making by inviting students and employers to participate in shaping our educational offerings. We believe that by engaging in open dialogue and providing feedback on courses and experiences, our community members contribute to the continuous improvement and relevance of our programmes. This collaborative approach not only empowers individuals but also strengthens our collective commitment to fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. Through this participatory process, we ensure that our educational practices remain dynamic and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders.  Want to know more?  Join our next Industry Advisory Board to make our voice heard, or respond now to our 'What 3 skills' initiative to tell us what 3 things you need to see in your apprentices.
